"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only one problem: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous fans have also coveted the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a close unit. Their music videos frequently depict them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The trio are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics detail endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent confidence required a new sound – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

However Haim will consistently be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
