Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then found multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.

A high-ranking representative said the vandalism made him speechless and had to be solved quickly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
